A callback is a second audition. It means the casting team liked your first audition enough to bring you back for another look, usually in front of more decision makers, before choosing who books the role.
Getting a callback is a genuine win. Most people who audition never hear anything at all. A callback means you cleared the first filter and you are now on a short list, competing with a much smaller group.
What Happens at a Callback
The format depends on the project, but callbacks tend to be more involved than first auditions. You might:
- Perform the same material again, sometimes with adjustments from the director
- Read new scenes you did not see the first time
- Read opposite other actors to test chemistry between potential castmates
- Meet more people in the room: the director, producers, sometimes the writer or network executives
For commercials and modeling work, a callback might simply be another look at you on camera, in different clothing, or alongside other finalists. The through line is the same: they are narrowing choices inside a casting session built around fewer, stronger options.
How to Approach a Callback
The most common advice from casting professionals is simple: do what you did the first time. Something in your original audition worked. Changing your look, your choices, or your energy can erase the very thing that got you called back.
A few practical rules:
- Wear the same or similar clothing as your first audition
- Keep the core of your performance, but stay flexible
- Take direction eagerly. Adjustments are often a test of how you handle notes, not a sign you did something wrong
- Prepare any new material as thoroughly as the original
If your first audition was a self-tape, rewatch it before the callback so you can recreate what they responded to.
What a Callback Means, and What It Does Not
A callback means you are castable, your materials are working, and this office now knows your name. It does not guarantee a booking. Final decisions involve chemistry, scheduling, budgets, and matching you against actors already cast, none of which you control.
On larger projects, a callback may lead to further rounds, such as a screen test for major roles. However far you get, every callback is evidence that your work lands. Track which offices call you back, keep submitting, and treat each one as a relationship, not a lottery ticket.
