Questions to Ask a Talent Agent Before Signing

Before signing with a talent agent, you should ask about five things: their vision for you, their client roster, their commission and contract terms, their communication style, and what they expect from you.

An agent meeting is a two-way interview. They're evaluating you, and you should be evaluating them just as hard.

Signing with the wrong agent is worse than staying unrepresented, because a bad contract can lock up your career while doing nothing for it. Here's the full checklist.

Questions About Their Vision for You

This is the most revealing category, so start here.

  • What roles or jobs do you see me going out for?
  • How would you pitch me? What's my type in your eyes?
  • What's missing from my materials or training?
  • Where do you see my career in two to three years?

A good agent answers specifically. If they can't articulate what they'd sell you as, they can't sell you. Vague enthusiasm like "you've got a great look" without a plan attached is a warning sign.

Questions About the Roster and Workload

  • How many clients do you personally represent?
  • How many clients are in my type and category?
  • Who would handle me day to day?
  • How often do clients at my level go out on submissions?

You're listening for conflicts and capacity. If they already rep six people who look like you, you're insurance, not a priority. If one agent handles hundreds of clients, do the math on your share of their attention.

Questions About Money and the Contract

  • What's your commission rate, and does it vary by job type?
  • How long is the contract term, and how does either side exit?
  • Are there any fees or costs I'd ever be responsible for?
  • Is this exclusive, and across which markets and categories?

The baseline: legitimate agents work on commission, typically 10 to 20 percent, and never charge upfront fees. Any signing fee or photo package requirement means the meeting is over.

Get every answer in writing in the contract itself, then read it against our list of talent agency contract red flags before you sign.

"A good agent welcomes your questions. An agent who bristles at them is answering the biggest question of all."

Questions About Communication and Expectations

  • How do you prefer to communicate, and how quickly do you respond?
  • Will I know what I've been submitted for?
  • What do you expect from me: classes, materials, availability?
  • Can I still book my own work independently?

That last one matters more than people realize. Many working performers keep booking direct opportunities through platforms like Vibrant Casting alongside agency submissions, and you want to know upfront how your agent handles self-generated work and whether they commission it.

There's no universal right answer, but there is a right process: agreed in advance, in writing, no surprises.

Do Your Homework Before the Meeting

Some vetting happens outside the room.

  • Check whether the agency is licensed, where your state requires it
  • Look at their roster and recent bookings if visible
  • Search the agency name plus "scam" or "reviews"
  • Ask other actors or models about their reputation

If you're new to vetting industry contacts in general, our agency contract red flags guide covers the patterns that separate real opportunities from predatory ones.

The Practical Takeaway

Walk into every agent meeting with questions written down. Vision, roster, money, communication, expectations.

Specific answers and written terms: good sign. Vagueness, pressure to sign fast, or any upfront cost: walk.

The right agent will respect the diligence. The wrong one will be annoyed by it, which tells you everything before a single pen comes out.
