How to Read a Casting Breakdown (Every Term Explained)

A casting breakdown is the document that describes a project's roles: who they're looking for, what the job pays, when it shoots, and how to submit. Learning to read a casting breakdown properly is one of the most underrated skills in this business.

Misread it, and you waste submissions on roles you were never right for. Read it well, and you submit faster and smarter than most of your competition.

Here's every section of a breakdown, decoded in plain English.

The top of a breakdown describes the project itself. Key terms:

• Project type: feature film, short film, episodic (TV series), commercial, industrial (corporate video), print, new media (web content)
• Union status: whether the project runs under a union contract like SAG-AFTRA, or is non-union. This affects who can submit and how pay works
• Shoot dates and location: when and where filming happens. Only submit if you can actually be there
• Rate: what the job pays, often listed per day or per project

"TBD" on dates is normal early in a production. A missing rate on a professional project is worth noticing, and a project with no verifiable name at all belongs in your red flag column.

Each role gets its own block. Here's the vocabulary:

• Lead: a main character carrying the story
• Supporting: a significant character with meaningful scenes
• Day player: a smaller speaking role, often working one or a few days
• Co-star / guest star: TV terms for smaller and larger episode roles
• Under 5 (U5): a role with five lines or fewer
• Background / extra: non-speaking atmosphere performers
• Featured background: background positioned prominently on camera, still non-speaking
• Stand-in: someone who takes an actor's place during technical setup

Age ranges mean playable age, not actual age. "20s to 30s" means you read that age on camera. Descriptions like "any ethnicity" or "gender nonconforming" mean exactly what they say: submit if you identify with the description.

When a breakdown says "must be comfortable with," take it seriously. Stunts, animals, water, kissing scenes: these are disclosed so you can opt out before anyone's time is wasted.

This is where breakdowns confuse people most, especially in commercial and print work.

• Session fee: what you're paid for the shoot day itself
• Usage: how and where the finished content will run (TV, web, social, billboards) and for how long
• Buyout: a lump sum covering usage rights, often instead of ongoing payments
• Exclusivity: a restriction on working for competing brands during the usage period
• Copy credit and meal: common shorthand on unpaid projects, meaning you get footage for your reel, a credit, and food

Usage matters because it's often worth more than the session. A national commercial that runs for a year is a very different job from a one-day shoot for internal use, even if the shoot day feels identical.

The bottom of a breakdown tells you exactly how to submit: what materials, what format, and by when.
